Last weekend, I had the pleasure of working with HOBY New Hampshire, a youth leadership organization founded in 1958 by Hugh O'Brian. HOBY's mission is to inspire and develop the youth and volunteers of our global community to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. I was fortunate to be a part of their 2023 leadership seminar, an epic three-day event held at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH. About 80 high school sophomores attended this event, which was filled with interactive activities and workshops that allowed the students to discover their personal leadership strengths while exploring the beautiful Saint Anselm College campus.

The seminar started with an introduction to leadership from three different perspectives: individual, group, and societal. The students learned how to cultivate their skills to lead others and make a positive impact in their homes, schools, and communities. The staff at HOBY New Hampshire did a great job of creating an interactive learning environment, with sessions that taught students about communication skills, conflict resolution, and problem-solving techniques.

One of the highlights of the weekend was the trip to the NH Food Bank Garden. The objective was for students to work together in teams to plant seeds and fill the garden with fresh, locally grown vegetables. It was a fantastic way to teach leadership through service, and the students were excited to be a part of something that would help address hunger issues in their community. Working in the garden offered a perfect way to practically apply all of the skills they had learned earlier in the seminar.

The activities and workshops in the leadership seminar were designed to provide the students with a foundation for being successful leaders. They were given the tools to understand and utilize their individual and collective strengths for the betterment of themselves and their communities. Overall, the HOBY seminar was a huge success in fulfilling its mission.

Working with HOBY New Hampshire was a rewarding and fulfilling experience. Witnessing young people grow into confident and motivated leaders was a genuine pleasure. The passion and dedication of the organizers to inspire and develop leaders in their community are truly exceptional.
